Natural Treatments For Anxiety

The world can be a terrifying place at times, and we’ve all been reminded of that in 2020. It’s been a hard year so far, and it’s tested the coping mechanisms of even the hardiest of it. If you’re someone who’s prone to feelings of anxiety and you’ve felt it pulling at you recently, you won’t be alone. Many of us know the feeling of anxiety creeping up on us and have learned to dread it, and most of us have our own strategies for dealing with it. Sometimes, though, those coping strategies aren’t enough.

When the normal methods fail, and we find that our anxiety is getting in the way of our day to day lives, the easiest thing to do is to call the doctor and ask to be medicated. That works for some people, and we mean no offense by this article if it works for you. It doesn’t work for everyone, though, and that’s becoming more apparent as more and more people start to realize that they have an anxiety problem. Many experts believe that there’s an anxiety epidemic in the world at the moment, and they have the statistics to prove it. If the trend continues, we’ll be in danger of becoming a society where almost everyone is on prescription medication, and that can’t be a good thing.

Almost every form of anxiety medication synthesized in a lab and prescribed to you by a doctor has side effects, and you can’t know whether or not you’ll be affected by them until you’ve started taking the pills. In a lot of ways, the process of taking the pills is similar to the process of putting money into popular online games like Christmas slots. When gamblers do that, they don’t know what the result of their bet will be until the reels of their online slots game stop spinning. When a person does it with medication, they don’t know what might happen next until their body has begun to process the pills. The key difference is that if you don’t like what you get when you’re playing online slots, you can spin again and look for another outcome. Medication doesn’t offer you that type of second chance.

Instead of automatically reaching for a prescription, you might want to consider trying one of these all-natural anxiety treatments instead.

Five Natural Ways to Treat Anxiety

Hops

No, we don’t mean you should stand on one leg and start hopping around your home. As any beer drinker will know, hops are a key component in beer. We’re not advocating drinking beer to treat your anxiety, though. When taken in isolation, hops contain a volatile oil that acts as a sedative, which can help to take the edge off your anxiety. You might be able to find it or use it in tea, although its bitter taste means that this might not be the most pleasant way to consume it. Instead, try to find it offered as an aromatherapy product or even inside a hops pillow. A few hours lying on a hops pillow might be all you need to regain your calm and focus and keep anxiety at bay for another day. As an added bonus, some studies suggest that it can even help you to sleep.

Lemon Balm

We like to think that our lives are more complicated and anxiety-inducing today than the lives of our ancestors were, but that isn’t necessarily true. Anxiety treatments have existed since at least the Middle Ages, and back then, lemon balm was commonly used to treat such a condition. There are a few ways you might choose to consume lemon balm as an anxiety aid, but the most common of them are as a tablet, as a tincture, and in tea. As it’s an adaptable ingredient, you might even wish to combine it with another anxiety-reducing substance like chamomile or even hops, as we mentioned previously. Be careful with dosages, though; too much lemon balm may increase your anxiety instead of reducing it.

Passionflower

Here’s a herb that American audiences won’t know much about, but European audiences might. Passionflower has been approved for use as a sedative by the government of Germany and is used widely as a stress and anxiety treatment there. Like other anxiety cures, it’s also just as potent as a cure for insomnia. It’s actually a little more potent than the other two suggestions we’ve made thus far, and so it’s suggested that people don’t take it for more than thirty days consecutively. As a sedative, passionflower has the potential to make anybody who takes it drowsy, so it shouldn’t be taken in conjunction with any other sedatives or if you’re required to be alert and active at all times. Taken just before you try to get to sleep, though, it could be your key to a restful night.

Breathe to control Anxiety

There’s a reason that learning to breathe properly forms a central part of most yoga classes. Our bodies are complicated in a lot of ways but surprisingly simple in others. As an example, they struggle to generate an anxiety response and process a deep breath at the same time. That’s why deep breathing exercises can stop anxiety dead in its tracks. The 4-7-8 technique is especially popular, and it goes like this. Breathe in deeply through your nose, counting to four as you do so. Hold your breath, and count to seven. Once you reach seven, breathe out slowly through your mouth while you count to eight. Repeat this twice, and you should feel noticeably calmer than you did before you started. You can do this any time you feel like your anxiety is building up, but doing it twice in the morning and twice before you go to bed at night should help you get through the day.

Stop Skipping Breakfast

There might be a correlation between people who don’t eat breakfast, and people who suffer from anxiety. Research into this field isn’t yet at an advanced enough stage to draw conclusions, but if you’re someone who doesn’t eat breakfast and you suffer from anxiety, you might want to find out whether eating breakfast does anything to solve the problem. One possible reason for the connection is that anxiety sufferers often demonstrate low levels of choline in their systems. Most of the choline our bodies need comes from food ingestion. Eggs, in particular, are a good source of choline. Have an egg in the morning, and feel like a good egg all day!

Natural Solutions and Quality Cultivation of Medicinal Cannabis

Demand for natural solutions oftentimes exceeds what businesses can supply. This rule is obvious, now more than ever, because demand for specific natural solutions increases due to the spread of COVID-19. Demand for medicinal cannabis and various cannabinoids is at an all-time high, pun intended, as consumers look for natural ways to relieve pain (physical and mental) and lessen the toll of chronic illness. Demand must not come at the expense of quality, however.

In a pandemic, amidst so much uncertainty, consumers deserve what they pay to receive: natural solutions. And yet, definitions vary about what is a natural solution. Clarifying the term is a necessity, especially among consumers who use medicinal cannabis as their principal source of treatment. Defining the seed-to-sale process of medicinal cannabis (and cannabinoids) is the best way to ensure a natural solution is what a seller claims it is.

What do we need to know about quality cultivation?

In California, there is a mandatory standard of quality, meaning: All products must be free of pesticide residuals, microbial contamination, and heavy metals, so as to maintain the potency of a given product. These standards are critical to producing clean and safe forms of medicinal cannabis and/or cannabinoids.

For retailers and consumers, quality has a different meaning. That is to say, quality is more than what the law requires or the minimum level of compliance growers must follow. Consumers equate natural solutions with exceptional quality. In turn, growers have to meet or surpass expectations with products that are both all-natural and consistently good. Therein lies the challenge: repeatability. It is not enough for a natural solution to be a quality product. Quality must impress consumers, never failing for reasons known and excusable or causes unknown and inexplicable. In short, natural solutions are attainable, but hard to maintain.

How can consumers know a brand of cannabis is, indeed, an all-natural product?

 A movement is underway to certify products that are organic, sustainable, and chemical-free. In the past, it was difficult to certify cannabis as organic because of conflicts between federal and state agencies. Oversight and certification nonetheless exists, which is a good thing, as producers have an independent source to vouch for the authenticity—the organic and all-natural ingredients—of specific types of medicinal cannabis and/or cannabinoids.

What quality control standards are in place?

Regulations vary among individual states, but guidelines restrict the use of pesticides, heavy metals  and microbiological contamination before products go to retailers. In addition, growers have robust standard operating procedures and follow best practices to ensure quality throughout the cultivation, distribution, and sale of cannabis. We continue to see growers take the initiative, in terms of surpassing what the law requires.

What is the level of expertise among cannabis growers?

Because commercial cultivation of cannabis is a new industry, expert cultivators need expert counsel regarding the transition from the underground economy to the lawful marketplace. That the majority of cultivators have made this switch voluntarily, that they have done so conscientiously, that they have done so in good conscience, speaks to their commitment to professionalism. Thanks, also, to technology and greater knowledge of manufacturing and packaged goods, the learning curve among growers continues to decrease. Put another way, better processes yield better results; better products reflect demand—by all parties—for natural solutions.

What else should people know about cannabis and sundry natural solutions?

Quality matters to growers and suppliers, in addition to retailers and consumers. For example: We benefit from the guidance of individual experts, like Damian Solomon, who has a degree in plant science and a broad working knowledge of what it means to source and deliver artisanal, all-natural solutions.

Again, people should take comfort in the fact that cannabis growers not only respect the expectations of consumers, but also, that the expectation among growers is that a product must be consistently excellent; that certifications are earned points of validation; that what matters to some matters to all. All-natural products are in demand, rising in tandem with innovations in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Or: From a single seed to a mighty stem (with the help of STEM) does a natural solution emerge. Let us ensure this growth continues, with safety for all.

Reduce Stress to Build Immunity

Stress is a common issue for many of us during these unusual times. Life is full of potential stressors, from those on the home front like strained communication with family members, to those that sometimes catch us off guard out in the world like an unhappy boss or a traffic jam that makes us late. We can’t control what other people bring to the table or what the world will throw at us on any given day, but what we can do, according to attorney turned mindfulness expert Julie Potiker, is learn to stay calm amidst the chaos. She shares a moving series of trials and triumphs — as well as tangible tips for how anyone can add the calming effects of mindfulness to their life — in her new book: “Life Falls Apart, but You Don’t Have To: Mindful Methods for Staying Calm In the Midst of Chaos.”

Here are some tips that people at any level of mindfulness experience — from complete beginner to practiced expert — can use to reduce stress in their life and protect their immune system according to Julie.

Five tips for fighting stress:

  1. Relax with a mindfulness meditation: Start with 12 minutes twice a day — or 20 minutes twice a day if you can make time. Look for guided meditations on Insight Timeror the free Balanced Mind with Julie Potiker podcaston iTunes. Mix it up so that your mind is relaxing into the practice.
  2. Make time for joy: Create a “joy list” and commit to choosing one or two things from it to do each day. To create the list, just let your mind wander for a few minutes with a pen and paper and watch the list grow. Don’t forget to add all life’s little joys, like a warm cup of tea or a bath. Then, when you pick something to bring joy to your day, do so with mindfulness; really feel the good feelings. Take a few breaths to absorb them and enrich the resulting positive mental state. This allows you to push the mental state to a neural trait, making a happy bridge in your brain and building your resilience.
  3. Name it to tame it: Identify what you are feeling and where it is occurring in your body. For example, “I feel stressed; my neck is tightening up.” This practice allows you to use mindfulness to step into awareness and out of the intensity of the emotional state.
  4. Ground yourself through the soles of your feet: Put your feet on the ground and send your attention down to the soles of your feet. How do they feel? Are you in socks and shoes? Barefoot? Cold or warm? Moist or dry? The act of doing this breaks the discursive loop of thoughts and emotions.
  5. Practice mindfulness with your food: Be the observer and pay mindful attention to the way you prepare, serve, and eat your food. Slice and dice mindfully; put your fork to your mouth mindfully; taste and chew mindfully. When you notice your attention being diverted to worrying about what might happen, or ruminating on the latest upsetting news story, gently bring your attention back to what you’re doing. If you can keep your attention here, even for two or three minutes, you will be giving your brain a much needed break from stress — while simultaneously encouraging healthy eating practices!

Mindfulness is the first step in emotional healing, It’s being able to turn toward and acknowledge our difficult thoughts and feelings — such as inadequacy, sadness, anger, or confusion — with a spirit of openness and curiosity. Self-compassion involves responding to these difficult thoughts and feelings with kindness, sympathy, and understanding so that we soothe and comfort ourselves when we’re hurting. Being both mindful and compassionate leads to greater ease and well-being in our daily lives.
